The release date for Minecraft's 1.17 Caves and Cliffs update (opens in new tab) is quickly approaching however for those who don't want to wait it out, Mojang's Snapshots are a great way to play upcoming features early.

Minecraft Snapshots are publicly-released test builds that are unpolished with features of upcoming updates for players to play with. It's an opportunity for Mojang to see how features work in the game before making them a permanent part of the official update. Players can report bugs and provide feedback to Mojang to improve the game.

Snapshots include everything the studio wants to try out and can include new mobs, biomes game mechanics, blocks. So far, Snapshots have a bunch of new features from the Caves and Cliffs update that include glow squids (opens in a new tab) cave generation (opens in a new tab) as well as the abundant fauna and flora (opens in new tab) that you'll encounter in the blocky caverns. If you're willing to accept some minor glitches every now and then, Minecraft Snapshots are a great way to test out new features before the update's official release. So, here's everything you need to know in order to see a glimpse of the future of Minecraft.

Minecraft Snapshot installation: How to access beta builds

Snapshots are available for the Java edition of Minecraft However, there's a way to see early features on the Bedrock edition also. Top top blog These are the Bedrock betas for Android, Xbox One and Windows 10, which are not the same as Snapshots but they do include a number of new features.

Mojang has made jumping into early versions of Minecraft fairly simple, so here's how to do it:

Snapshots of Minecraft: Java Edition:

- Open the Minecraft launcher. - Click the tab "Installations"

In the upper right corner, look for a box that is called Snapshots

The most recent Snapshot will be at the bottom of your installation list

Beta on Minecraft: Bedrock Edition:

Visit the Microsoft Store app on Windows 10

Look for the Xbox Insider App and download it

Start the app and then select the Insider Content tab on the left

- Select Minecraft and hit the join button

The app can take you to Minecraft's product page if you do not own a digital copy of the game

If you're after Xbox One or Android instructions for Minecraft, visit Mojang's beta pages (opens in a new tab) for further instructions. To keep up with new Snapshots and betas, bookmark the Minecraft forum's news page (opens in new tab) that provides a list of all the released versions.

Snapshots and betas are very unstable, and your system could be shaky or crash. So make sure you start in a place you aren't worried about being a bit damaged. In other words, best keep your top Minecraft builds (opens in new tab) secure in a different realm.

She writes mostly reviews as well as previews and features however, on rare occasions she will switch the content with news and guides.
