FCC Commissioner Writes to Apple and Google Regarding TikTok Removal

An FCC Commissioner, Brendan Carr, wrote to Apple and Google on Tuesday, asking that the companies take down TikTok from their app stores due to "its pattern of fraudulent data practices." This comes after BuzzFeed News reported last week that TikTok's workers in China had access to U.S.-based users' data to January.

As you all know, TikTok is an application that millions of Americans can access through their app stores. It also collects vast amounts of sensitive information regarding these users. TikTok is owned by Beijing-based ByteDance which is beholden to the Communist Party of China and legally required by Chinese law to comply with PRC's surveillance demands," Carr said in a letter addressed to Sundar Pichai and Tim Cook.

"It is evident that TikTok is a significant security risk to the nation because of its massive data harvesting being combined with Beijing's apparent unchecked access to that sensitive data."

TikTok is more than just a video application. That's the sheep's attire.

It stores sensitive data, which, according to new reports, is being used in Beijing.

After BuzzFeed News published its report, TikTok quickly went on the defense and announced that it is shifting all U.S. users' data to Oracle servers in the country. It also stated that the company still uses its U.S.- and Singapore-based backup servers. It also stated that it plans to "delete U.S. users private information from our data centers and then pivot to Oracle cloud servers in the U.S."

"We're also making changes to our operations in line with this work - including the new department we recently created with U.S. WOW SERVERS -based management, to exclusively handle U.S. user data for TikTok," the company added.

The data practices of TikTok's users have been scrutinized numerous times. India had to ban TikTok in 2020 due to security concerns for national security. Former President Donald Trump and Joe Biden have raised concerns about the relationship of the video app with China and how it impacts U.S. user data. Trump suggested the ban of TikTok or the possibility of selling its U.S. users' data.
