Have you ever attended a concert in the metaverse? Judging by the latest category that's added to the MTV Video Music Awards roster it's likely you should. The VMAs will award an award to a Moon Person for "Best Metaverse Performance" this year, but it's not known whether the award will be given online or in person.
The nominees include Ariana Grande, BLACKPINK, BTS, Charli XCX, Justin Bieber, and Twenty One Pilots. Your top performers have been performing in the metaverse.
Each artist has put their own spin on their metaverse concert. Ariana Grande performed a space-themed show in Fortnite as well as BLACKPINK brought their "pretty wild" style to PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Mobile. BTS have been singing their chart-toppers in English "Butter" and "Permission to Dance" on a stage in Minecraft where the boys' boxy avatars tried to recreate their signature dance moves. Charli XCX, Twenty One Pilots and others chose Roblox performances. (It should be noted that Charli XCX's performance was a result of her collaboration with Samsung.) Justin Bieber also put on a show at Wave, the virtual entertainment platform.
And they aren't the only performers in the metaverse. Virtual and metaverse-themed concerts gained popularity in the aftermath of the pandemic. Live, in-person entertainment was put on hold. But online concerts and virtual performances are in the future, particularly as the metaverse is becoming more ingrained with out everyday lives.
The recognition at the VMAs indicates that metaverse performances may even be a staple in the music industry. Only time will tell.
