WARSAW (Reuters) 25 February 2015 - In the last few days new cyberattacks have hacked the Polish government's computer servers as well as the national payment clearing system, according to an official from the government who is responsible for cyber security.
Janusz Cieszynski spoke on Polish public radio, and said that authorities have not yet identified the source. This comes as Russia insists on a full-scale invasion in Ukraine, Poland's eastern neighbor.
Ukraine has also been hit by a series of cyberattacks in recent weeks that Kyiv blames on Russia. Moscow has repeatedly denied any involvement.
Cieszynski said that "the website of the (Polish national clearing system, as well as servers dedicated to the government's email networks were hacked."
"The attacks are being closely watched... It's too early to determine the authorship of these attacks."
Separately, Wojciech Dbrowski, chief executive of PGE SA, Poland's largest power utility, stated to the newscaster that the IT networks of his company were also targeted. However, he added that they were secure and that heat and power were not disrupted.
Poland has increased its cyber security alert on Monday, requiring the operators of critical infrastructure to continuously monitor and maintain their systems.
Western governments and many businesses are on high alert for cyberattacks since the announcement of sweeping economic sanctions on Russia who's forces were on Friday pounding Ukrainian cities, including the capital Kyiv.
