Bravery
1. One day in class, our Form Teacher, Mr Ong, stepped into class with a delighted expression on his face. All of us were surprised. Mr Ong hardly smiled. Why would he be smiling? "Class," he said, "our school has prepared a Primary 6 Camp as an after-PSLE activity. Please bring these letters home and let your parents sign the letter. The camp will start in two weeks time and last for two days and one night." Once we heard this, we cheered in joy. Most of the class was bored from playing card games. A camp would be a nice change!
2. The day before the camp, we started to pack our things according to the packing list. Since the camp would not last long, we were told to pack light. We were even going to have a real campfire for once! I was excited, thinking that this would be a memorable experience before leaving Primary School.
3. The next morning, all the Primary 6 pupils were gathered at the basketball court. The buses bringing us to the campsite had already arrived. Everyone was chattering excitedly at the events to come and the extra things they had bought. One of my friends, Laurence, said, "I brought a big bag of marshmallows that we can roast at the campfire. I also brought along crackers, candies, and much more!" I giggled at his statement. Laurence was very cheeky and playful and disobeyed the teachers' instructions often. The camp will be even more lively with him around.
4. At the campsite, we enjoyed the activities planned for us specially. The one that I liked most was the Rock Climbing station. I managed to climb up to the top of the wall in a very small amount of time! After playing, we were told to wash up before the campfire. Laurence and I sat side-by-side on a wooden bench. He was holding the bag of marshmallows, eager to open them and start to roast the sweet snack.
5. As we sang campfire songs while sitting around the campfire, nobody except a teacher saw Laurence opening the large bag. "Laurence!" shouted the teacher, "Give that bag to me!" Laurence, shocked by the sudden shout of the teacher, tipped the bag of marshmallows towards the fire. the marshmallows flew out from the bag into the small fire.
6. Suddenly, the fire grew big and a raging fire appeared before our eyes. The night wind blew hard, blowing the fire towards Laurence and I. We screamed in fright and quickly ran away from our table. The fire managed to catch hold of the wooden bench that we had been sitting on and started to burn it. Just as we were close to safety, Laurence tripped over a small rock and fell down. The rest of the P6 batch, including the teachers, had quickly ran to cover. Only Laurence was at the campfire area, with the fire only meters away from him. Laurence was going to be burnt by the fire.
7. Without thinking about what I was doing, I rushed towards the fire. The pupils in my class shouted for me to come back, saying it was too dangerous to go there, but I ignored their cries. I only had one thing in my mind: I had to save Laurence, even if I am putting myself in danger. As fast as lightning, I reached where Laurence was wincing in pain, pulled his hand and dragged him to safety. Laurence cried as we saw the nearby tents going up in flames. I consoled him, saying, "Don't worry, the teachers have already called the fire brigade. They will be here any moment."
8. Sure enough, the fire brigade arrived and they put to work immediately. The raging fire was put out in just five minutes. When all traces of flames were finally removed, we cheered. Mr Ong congratulated me for saving Laurence from suffering from burns. It was due to my bravery that saved him.
9. In the end, the camp had to be cut short because of the damages done. A few camping bags had been slightly burnt, which gave out a smell of burnt fabric and plastic. This was truly a memorable and terrifying experience that I will remember for many years to come.
