A flaw known as Log4Shell found in open-source logging library Log4j exposes millions of devices vulnerable to attacks. As The Verge notes, apps and services keep a record of every event that occur while they're in operation, which gives them a way to analyze the performance of their application and determine what went wrong in case of errors. Log4j is an extremely popular and widely used logging program, and even popular cloud services such as Steam and iCloud, as well as applications like Amazon, Twitter and Minecraft are believed to be vulnerable to attacks exploiting Log4Shell.
According to Ars Technica, it first was discovered when Minecraft websites began reporting on vulnerabilities that allow hackers to execute malicious code in the game. It became clear soon after, though, that the issue doesn't impact Minecraft only. Marcus Hutchins, a security researcher who stopped the spread from WannaCry malware described the vulnerability as "extremely serious" because millions of applications utilize Log4j to log.
The malicious actors could exploit it to remotely execute code on servers, directing them to download and execute malware that could compromise businesses and personal data. It's easy to exploit and could be triggered by simply posting messages. Hutchins stated that in the case of Minecraft the attackers were able to execute code remotely through the posting of a message in the chatbox. LunaSec is an app security firm, declared that the vulnerability in Apple's server's servers is done by simply changing the name of an iPhone.
Log4j has already issued an update for the vulnerability and affected services such as Minecraft and Cloudflare have already issued patches to protect users. Log4j users who manage their own networks may want to patch their systems as soon as possible , if they are able.
