Coronavirus Forces Americans to Search for Easter Fun at least 6 Feet Apart

New York, NY Easter is a memorable holiday for 6-year-old Nora Heddendorf. It's a day Nora loves to dress up with fancy shoes and dresses and go on a hunt with her family and friends to find colorful eggs.

This year, the coronavirus pandemic has forced her into a state of adaptation. She'll finish her Easter outfit by adding a white mask, disposable gloves in blue and disinfectant wipes. After being informed that the annual egg hunt in her New Jersey town might be cancelled, she thought of an "rock hunt".

Article content Nora's hunt replaces eggs with vibrantly colored stones and lets her neighbors go on their social-distancing walks to hunt.

Article content "I was sad that it was going to end up being cancelled due to the virus," the child told Reuters in a phone interview. "I would like people to be content."

The pandemic has affected everyone from the White House to small towns parks. It also has forced the cancellation of traditional Easter egg hunts across the United States. Closed churches and plans to scotch Easter dinners with extended families have been cancelled.

However, many Americans are still looking for ways to have holiday fun, from an Oregon candy maker creating chocolate bunnies wearing face masks to a Texas church hosting an egg hunt in virtual reality with the game Minecraft.

Article content Nora and her mother began organizing their hunt in Medford Lakes a few weeks ago. She gathered a plethora of DIY kits, each containing five rocks, four paint colors, and instructions, all tucked away in the plastic bag. Of course, she wore disposable gloves and spraying the contents with disinfectant.

She then left the kits outside her home to be picked up by those who wish to participate. The young artist, Nora's rocks, requested her friends return the adorned rocks she gave to her for hiding.

"Thank you for helping Nora's Rocks bring our community closer but also separating us," she wrote in the instruction note she included with the kits.

Her mother, Samantha Heddendorf, president of an environmental cleanup business which has been removing toxins from structures affected by the coronavirus outbreak, said the hunt will begin on Good Friday and will continue through Easter Sunday, with fresh batch of painted rocks to be found each day.

Content of the article The aim of this project is to install 500 stones "eggs" in every corner of the 1 mile (2.6 km) town.

"People are able to look for Easter eggs or rocks on their social distancing walks." They could have something to look for and then pick them up and at the very least, have a smile to share the joy of Easter with," Samantha Heddendorf said.

In Central Point, Oregon, chocolatier Jeff Shepherd had a brainstorm to save his Lillie Belle Farms from shutdown in the wake of the coronavirus. He informed his Facebook followers that he was going to create "Covid Bunnies", which are dark and milk chocolate chocolates with blue faces masks, and white chocolate ones without blue masks for faces.

It was an enormous success. Shepherd was able to hire back the full-time staff of seven that he laid off and has sold 5,000 bunnies, and is in a frenzy with back orders. He is now limiting purchases to six per customer.

Article content Safe distancing to thwart virus spread is what convinced the Tate Springs Baptist Church in Arlington, Texas, to go digital with its Easter Egg hunt, using Minecraft but removing potentially frightening game elements like monsters.

"Our primary goal is to preach the gospel, but we also want kids to have fun and enjoy Easter," said Reverend Curtis James.

Back in New Jersey, Nora was delighted that her idea had been warmly embraced by a wide range of people, with the town mayor stopping by to watch her fill the kits and the local Lions Club inviting her for lunch "when the whole thing is over."

Her most cherished "thank you" was wrapped in gift wrappers of toilet paper, one of the staples - including eggs - being stored by panic-buyers during the pandemic.

"My mom smiled when the paper for the toilet camein," Nora said. (Reporting by Barbara Goldberg, New York; Additional reporting by Rich McKay, Atlanta; Editing done by Rosalba Obrien
