Towards the end of the prologue the group meets up with a host, to which he offers to be their leader that will give them a satisfactory experience on their journey. The speaker then reveals what the people’s response was: “Of course we all agreed, in fact we swore it / Delightedly, and made entreaty too / That he should act as he proposed to do” (830-832). If there was a reform that had to be shown based on real life, then their group up wouldn’t be realistic at all, as some of the characters such as the Friar (who partakes in bribery) and the Knight (who has done many heroic deeds) would easily get into arguments just by being beside each other. The fact that they all agree to be with one another shows that Chaucer only wanted to write a simple collection of short stories with many diverse characters without having any obligation to enlighten or condemn any of them.
