Minecraft is an open world video game that was initially developed by Swedish programmer Markus "Notch" Persson and later, published and developed by Mojang. Minecraft's innovative and building features let players create structures from textured cubes in an artificially generated 3D world. Exploration, resource gathering crafting, combat and other activities are all part of the game. There are a variety of gameplay options available. These include survival mode, where the player must gather resources to create the world and keep the health of their body, a creative mode, where players have unlimited resources and the ability to fly, and an adventure mode where other players create custom maps. A spectator mode lets players to fly around and cut through blocks, but they are unable to place blocks in a specific order. The PC version of the game is known for its mods from third parties, which add various new characters, items, and quests to the game.



The alpha version was released publicly released for PC on May 17, 2009, and after gradual updates, the full version was released on November 18, 2011. A version for Android was released the following month on October 7 and an iOS version was released on November 17, 2011. The game was released on Xbox 360 as an Xbox Live Arcade title on May 9 2012, and on the PlayStation 3 on December 17 2013, on the PlayStation 4 (September 4, 2014) on the Xbox One on September 4, 2014, on the PlayStation 4 on September 4 September 4, 2014. In the 2011 Game Developers Conference, Minecraft received five awards at the 2011 Game Developers Conference. Just Another Wordpress Site Of the Game Developers Choice Awards, it won the Innovation Award, Best Downloadable Game Award and Best Debut Game Award; from the Independent Games Festival, it was awarded the Audience Award and the Seumas McNally Grand Prize. In 2012, Minecraft was awarded a Golden Joystick Award in the category Best Downloadable Game. As of June 2015 over 70 million copies were sold, with 20 million between the Xbox 360 and Xbox One, as well as 20 million on the Xbox 360 and Xbox One and 20 million on PC, making it the top-selling PC game to date and the third-highest-selling video game ever. On September 15, 2014, Microsoft announced a deal to acquire Mojang and the ownership of the Minecraft intellectual property for US$2.5 billion. The deal was completed on the 6th of November on the 6th of November, 2014.
