Six wood planks are required.



Obtain one iron ingot.

Place your planks, iron, and other materials on the table of crafting. Place the iron ingot in the central position in the top row. Place planks to the left and right in the top row, and all three spaces in the middle row, and the middle of the bottom row.



Drag the shield from the upper right box into your inventory.
