Epic Games 'definitely Won't' Follow Minecraft NFT Ban

Epic Games founder and CEO Tim Sweeney says his firm "definitely will not" follow Minecraft developers in banning nonfungible tokens (NFTs).

As previously reported, Mojang Studios, Minecraft developers, has banned NFT integrations on Wednesday as it believes NFTs have a speculative aspect and a high risk of exclusion and scams are incompatible with the game's fundamentals.

While the NFT community was highly critical of the move, the crypto-skeptic gamers were overwhelmingly supportive.

Sweeney's company is the creators of the widely successful battle royal game Fortnite that is thought of as a Metaverse platform. Although Epic Games isn’t necessarily pro-crypto and NFTs, its CEO said that the company isn’t trying to force any opinions regarding the subject on its users.

Developers should be free to design their games, and you should be free to choose whether you want to play them. I don't believe that retailers or operating system makers should force their views on other people. We shouldn't.

In response to the post, Twitter user Low5ive asked Sweeney if Epic Games' policy on prohibiting "hateful/discriminatory content" differs from this. In reply, Sweeney suggested that Epic Games does make "editorial" judgements, however NFTs do not currently fall under their umbrella.

"A store can decide to not make such judgements and instead host something that's legal, or choose to define mainstream acceptable norms as we do, or allow only games that are in line with the individual beliefs of the owner," he said.

Mojang Studios' NFT ban has been a major blow to NFT Worlds, a project built on Minecraft's open-source servers, with a major problem.

The community-driven play-to-earn (P2E) platform has an entire ecosystem of crypto and NFT built around it with its NFTs earning 51,000 Ether (ETH) equivalent to $80.8 million worth of trading volume as of the time of writing. However the NFT floor price has fallen from 3.33 ETH to 1.01 ETH since the news dropped. Meanwhile, its native token WRLD dropped 55% during the timeframe.

After the Mojang announcement, the NFT Worlds team stated it is now "brainstorming solutions" on how to proceed. The team said it is trying to reach out to Minecraft to see if a possible solution is found. In the event of a solution, the team suggested a switch to a GameFi platform or a Minecraft-like game engine.
