Pre-independence media in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU) and it's wing, the Zimbabwe African National Liberation Army (ZANLA) had the following media:

✓ Zimbabwe News - publication/press
•Nathan Shamuyarira was the party's Secretary for Information and Publicity and edited the white-owned publication, the African Daily News in 1956 which explains why the publication served African interests
•Shamuyarira later became the first minister of Information at independence

✓ Radio Mozambique from Maputo, Voice of Zimbabwe - broadcast (Frederick 1982)
•According to Eddison Zvobgo (cited in Frederikse 1982) who was who was ZANU's Deputy Secretary for Information and Publicity during the liberation struggle, his party recognised the importance of radio during the war and negotiated for free radio time with Frontline countries
✓ Zvobgo also highlighted the use of publications and pamphlets as media to convey messages depicting the violent nature of the Rhodesian army against ordinary citizens and the victories of liberation fighters in major battles (Frederikse 1982)

✓ Music was also used as an alternative voice to inform citizens about the objectives of the war (Frederiske 1982)
• Chimurenga songs from Zimbabwe's popular veteran musician, Thomas Mapfumo were also a result of inspirations by Voice of Zimbabwe from both ZANU's Radio Mozambique and ZAPU's Radio Moscow but mainly from the former

✓ Zimbabwe African People's Union (ZAPU) and its liberation wing the Zimbabwe People's Revolutionary Army (ZIPRA) had the following media:

✓ Zimbabwe Review - press/publication

✓ Radio Moscow from Russia

✓ Zezani choir which composed defiance songs against the colonial authorities

✓ Both parties also made use of all night vigils (pungwes) to disseminate information about the liberation struggle and inspire citizens to support it.
Thanks Boss.
- Willie Musarurwa was an editor for several black publications, including African Weekly and the African Daily News.
- He supported the nationalist campaign of the Zimbabwe African People’s Union (ZAPU), led by Joshua Nkomo
- In 1963 he became ZAPU’s Information and Publicity secretary
Thanks wangu.
So for ZANU we have Nathan Shamuyarira and for ZAPU we have Willie Musarurwa... the papers they edited were therefore supporting nationalist cause
