Minecraft shouldn't ever Feel Clingy, Mojang Says

Mojang is still paying attention to what other survival games are doing well.

Right before the most recent Minecraft 1.19 (opens in new tab) update was released I asked Mojang what the future of Minecraft will look like. Game director Agnes Larsson and developer Nir "Ulraf" Vaknin weren't willing to discuss specific features for the next major update. It's not a surprise, they're likely saving this for the next Minecraft Live showcase. Instead, we talked about how they're still learning from other crafters and how they want to "keep the excitement of Minecraft" for the next 10 years or more.

When Minecraft's alpha launched in 2010 it brought crafting and survival on the map. There are a myriad of other crafting games later-many also made from voxels-Minecraft remains the gold standard for Sandbox-based creativity. Mojang could easily become complacent after having been in the top spot for so long I can imagine. Minecraft It could then be easy to be a closed-minded company and source ideas only from its own developers and players.

Larsson and Vaknin both insisted they wouldn't declare Minecraft superior to the rest. (I would, though. I don't want to sound like a boastful person, but it doesn't hurt. They do however say that they know what makes Minecraft unique and will keep the uniqueness of Minecraft.

Larsson said it was intrinsic motivation. Larsson called it intrinsic motivation.

Vaknin agreed with the statement that Minecraft's success lies in the fact that it requires players to be self-motivated "A lot a games are veering from that because a lot of players want to be guided and that's fine."

I've tried all blends of crafting games for survival throughout the years. I was most recently drawn to Valheim's Viking crafting, which I really enjoyed for several months. I also enjoyed session-based survival in Icarus, and V Rising's vampire crafting for a few days. Even Valheim that I was obsessed with for over 100 hours and helped to lobby for as our game of the year (opens in a new tab) in 2021 isn't keeping me coming back the way Minecraft has.

Vaknin stated that he has been keeping up with the competition. Like me, he was interested in the way that food and hunger work in Valheim. It made me think about how I treated food. In Minecraft, for example, I was not allowed to skip food systems or treat all food items equally. He adds, "I spend time thinking about that and thinking about whether there are any lessons to be learned from it."

"V Rising has a very interesting goal and boss tracking system," Vaknin also said in reference to the way you need to follow a boss around the map to find them. It reminded me of the way you can find the End stronghold in Minecraft with the eyes of the ender.

Vaknin hopes Minecraft will not chase its users even though it can learn from Minecraft.

"Minecraft is not clingy," was how he said in the following conversation. He likened it to an old friend who will always be there for you, no matter if you decide to leave and come back months later.

Minecraft update: What's new Minecraft skins: New styles Minecraft mods: Beyond vanilla Minecraft shaders: Spotlight Minecraft seeds: New and exciting worlds Minecraft texture packs: Pixelated Minecraft servers Online worlds Minecraft commands: All cheats

Vaknin described a common experience within the Minecraft community that is playing for a long time , then returning to it on a regular basis when the mood strikes. This is exactly how I've dealt with it for years myself, and I'm glad it's a habit that Mojang believes in developing.

"So many games you play can pull you into a bit too much and then you're not ready for to let it end. I love that Minecraft does not do that. It is very important to me that this is maintained."

"One thing recently added to our core values is: you play Minecraft because you want to, not because you are forced to," Larsson added.

As I start looking ahead to the announcement of Minecraft version 1.20 It's great to know that the people in charge are confident enough to keep up with all the most recent trends in survival and crafting without necessarily chasing them.
