New Minecraft Skins With Default Minecraft Skins Recall Steve's Beard

Mojang has changed the default Minecraft skins to Steve and Alex - and Minecraft Steve's beard has come back after years of sporting a clean-shaven look. The iconic blue-shirted avatar of the game of crafting, Minecraft Steve's original model featured a brown goatee - which some players mistook for smiling eyes - but it was removed in a bid to create a gender-neutral look for the sandbox game's default character.



In 2014, a new default skin was introduced to Minecraft - Minecraft Alex. Featuring a green top and longer red hair that is tied into ponytails, Alex offers a slightly more feminine look than Steve's model. Microsoft Studio head of Minecraft Helen Chiang said in a 2018 interview that the company wanted to use the Minecraft brand to subvert traditional gender stereotypes by presenting Alex and Steve as having the same physical characteristics and abilities.



With the two options now available, it was decided to bring back Steve's famous goatee. A post on the Minecraft subreddit highlighted the new skins that also improve the shading on Alex to give the second model a more natural three-dimensional look. The response has been overwhelming positive, with fans excited to see Steve's beard back.



Many commenters claimed that Steve is now in line with the official artwork, including the appearance of the character in Super Smash Bros Ultimate. "I am able to understand why they removed it," said the Reddit comment that received the most votes. "But it was evidently an integral part of Steve's design, and Mojang seems to agree with." It's wonderful to see it return after many years.



Jasper Boerstra, Minecraft's lead artist, made a comment on the new look via Twitter. He wrote, "I'm glad you like the return of the beard!" Boerstra also noted that classic banding techniques and 'pillow shading" are used in the new skins but he asked for feedback on whether this decision was the right one.
