Lego takes on Minecraft with a video game

Danish toy maker Lego has announced a competitor to popular video game Minecraft.
Lego Worlds is now available for purchase at PS11.99, via the Steam gaming platform. The game's final release, featuring classic and modern playsets , as well as popular mini-figures, is expected in 2016.
Players' feedback will be used to improve features.
Lego already sells Minecraft playsets so gamers can physically create their own virtual creations. Lego Worlds invites fans to do the reverse.
Tom Stone, TT Games director of management, said that Lego Worlds "embodies the physical, Lego brick building fun that fans have enjoyed for the years, but on a new digital platform that offers a completely new type of experience using the beloved bricks."
"From the brick-by-brick editor, to discovering an expansive range of characters, items and creatures that will populate your worlds, the possibilities of creativity are endless," he added.

Daniel Goldberg, who has written a book about the growth of Minecraft has said that he "was shocked that it had taken them so long".
He claimed that Minecraft was exactly what Lego could have done 10 years ago.
"I'm sure it will be a huge success for them."
Markus Persson, the Swedish video game developer who came up with Minecraft, has not hidden his love of Lego, and it appears to be reciprocal.

David Gram, Lego's Marketing Director, said in the past year that "Minecraft was a digital Lego." It's a great idea, but we wish we had invented it.
Mr Goldberg believes that Mr Persson also known as Notch is likely to be "flattered" by the outcome of the game.
He claimed that Lego was his favorite toy as a kid, and that it was the main inspiration for Minecraft. It was satisfying to see the things come full circle."
"I believe there will be any animosity. In general, game creators are delighted when someone copies an existing title.
Lego is targeted at youngsters, but it is also marketed to an adult-only group of enthusiasts.
Microsoft bought Minecraft last year. It has been a hit with both adults and kids.
Mr. Goldberg stated that "the players for Minecraft has proven to be quite large, so I'm sure there will be space for both games."
Minecraft is the most streamed game on video.
