It should come as no surprise that children are spending more time on their devices during the COVID-19 epidemic. How can you ensure they're balancing remote education with social media, gaming, and Fortnite? That's where Microsoft's new Family Safety app comes in. The announcement in March about the free program was made public and is now available for download by anyone with an iOS/Android device.
You can use the app to set time limits for specific Android, Windows and Xbox applications, including video games like Minecraft. If your child asks for an extension, you have the option of extending their time limit by 15 or 30 minutes, as well as one, two or three hours. You can also set up the Family Safety app so that you are notified whenever your child wishes to purchase through the Microsoft Store.
If you're looking to keep tabs on your child the application can be set to send a weekly "activity report email that divides the time they spend on their screens by device and application. The idea is to alert you when there's a problem and to start conversations with your family members. https://nfo.so/ Finally, the app offers location tracking to instantly know where all of your family members are in the real world. In the future, Microsoft 365 Family subscribers will also get alerts when a family member is in or leaves a particular location. The premium plan will offer some type of habit-based tracking for safety while driving, beginning in the US, Canada and Australia.
None of these tools are particularly innovative, and they're not worth the effort if your family is spending most of their free time on Macs, iPhones and iPads. If every member is invested in the Microsoft ecosystem, this could be a decent dashboard or first port of call if nothing else - to ensure they're living a healthy life both online and in the real world.
