Now is the Time to Start!

Clara and I run Minecraft on our home FreeBSD server inside jail, which keeps Java and other dependencies contained in a single location. Although I haven’t tested it, the idea is that it is possible to run the server wherever Java is supported, including Linux, NetBSD and possibly other operating systems.

Well, I decided I could not let it go! The good news is, you can indeed run an Minecraft server on the OS I love as well. This is how I did it. I'm sure there are many more.

Getting Java installed

Once you've installed NetBSD, configured networking, and enabled pkgin, you'll must install an OpenJDK to run Minecraft.

OpenJDK 17 is required for Minecraft 1.17 and later. OpenJDK 16 however, is the most current version as of July 20,22. TOP MINECRAFT SERVERS To confirm, search:

If it's not yet 16 You can pull the most recent packages by opening your repo file:

And changing the repo URL In my case, 9.0 to 9.0_current

Thank you so much to ryoon@ for working on this. He has done a lot of great work for the NetBSD community, I feel I owe him at least some coffee or a beer the next time I'm fortunate enough to go to Japan.

Now we can installit, along with a few other useful tools:

Running Minecraft

You can use this location to run Minecraft like any Java-enabled server. I have all my files in one place:

Log as my local user and begin:

We can now start!

You'll notice that Java will throw an exception that says "system not supported, which those of us who run NetBSD are all too familiar with. It is safe to ignore, based on my testing.

Don't forget to agree to the EULA when you launch the server the first time:

Creating an introductory script

I like to symlink the latest version of the server to minecraft.jar:

Then refer to it in launch.sh with tmux in order to save the server even after disconnecting. I also would like to give Minecraft more memory:

We're now ready for the adventure!

Follow-up

Next, I would like to create a chroot environment that supports Java and Minecraft. This is similar to the FreeBSD jails. I have a NetBSD Chroot Exploration article in the process for a number of years. I will clean it up and publish it soon.
