It's a Decent Substitute for Sandbox Game

iLands is a free game for iPhone and iPad that is available for iOS 4.3 or later. However, iLands Premium is available as an in-app purchase for (US $3.99.) If you don't want to pay $6.99 for Minecraft - Pocket Edition, then this is the game for you. You begin with a brand new block world that you can build on and customize however you chose.

The graphics are good in comparison to Minecraft - Pocket Edition, but they could be much better. The D-pad is situated on the left-hand side and allows for strafing, forward and backwards. Sometimes the D-pad can be a bit difficult to use. It takes some getting used to, but it is manageable for most of the time. The control on your right side is for jumping up only and it works great. When navigating the terrain, the experience was a little jerky when you were hopping over obstacles in your path. Sometimes, the touch targets would not respond until I touched them several times. It took more than two taps to break dirt or grass or blocks with the X button. While I was creating and exploring my Solo world, the game crashed often.

A building material base is given to you. These materials comprise sand, grass, and bricks. The steel skeleton cubes are exclusive to iLands since I've not seen anything like them in Minecraft - Pocket Edition. The steel skeleton blocks are fantastic because you can build a solid structure and still have a view and daylight unlike building with solid blocks. I really enjoyed building with the cobblestone to construct roads and houses. You can unlock the stones with locks by purchasing the full version. Minecraft Gallery This review was done with the free version.

If you're looking for a survival mode, which is similar to Minecraft - Pocket Edition, you will not find it in the free version of iLands. I'm not sure if a similar feature to survival is available in the full paid version. I play in creative mode every day in Minecraft - Pocket Edition anyway, so I was not averse to that in iLands.

If you love building blocks in a virtual setting, iLands is a worthwhile free download. I would be interested to find out what the paid version lets you to do aside from unlocking building materials. I enjoyed creating buildings and whatever else my imagination could come up with.

ILands is a great alternative for sandbox games.
