The planets have aligned, and I've returned to Minecraft. Every now and then I'm compelled to call up some friends, spin up a server, and spend a few hours every week building crazy things and fighting to survive in a crowded world. this is what awesome looks like Usually hosting the server on my laptop, but this time I wanted to try something different (read more complex). I'm a developer and I have the power of the cloud at my fingertips So why not create a Linode instance and host the server there?
My Linode instance was already set up to host the server, so I tried to use it the very first night. Although it is able to run a static site with a 1GB RAM machine however, it's not equipped to run gaming servers. This is the best way to ensure that your server never fails and is unable to run on memory.
If you actually want to play the game, I would suggest using Linode's 4 core, 4GB memory instances. Unless you plan on having hundreds of players on the server at once it will be more than enough. The best part is that those instances cost $0.06/hr. Last night I played with a friend for four hours, and it cost me a whole 24C/.
I've written a small shell script that will perform the installation automatically and also sign the EULA. So , now whenever I want to play with some friends, I just need to select three buttons in the Linode admin panel, SSH into the server, execute my script and begin playing. After that, I can transfer the entire world onto my Mac via FTP and close the server. It's cheap, simple, and fast.
