If you were in doubt about World of Warcraft's popularity in the world of MMOs The most recent numbers of subscribers on MMOGChart will clear your doubts. Runescape Servers The pie chart above shows the market share in May 2006 of subscription-based MMOs. the enormous blue slice that takes up 50.6% of the market is Blizzard's behemoth.
While a variety of smaller games do have a slice of the pie however, the MMO world is heavily dominated by Lineage, World of Warcraft and Runescape -- the latter has been attracting subscribers in recent times.
This illustration of subscriptions and time shows that the bright green line (almost vertically) is World of Warcraft. This increase indicates that the market share of WoW has increased due to the introduction of new players, not because players have abandoned other MMOs. The market share is large, but the market is being expanded by WoW.
What's going to happen when the next wave of MMO games hits? We saw nothing at E3 that seemed geared to snatch the crown from WoW, but the influx of players to the MMO genre means that a lot of players should seek out new titles to play sooner or later. WoW's dominance is real and MMO designers who want players to play their games must consider this. Players who are suckered into paying an annual subscription fee to Blizzard will not want to pay two charges at the same time for instance.
