The Minecraft Timeline

The story of Minecraft is like a fantastic film script. Notch is the protagonist genius programmer who, starting as an indie, revolutionized the game industry completely by doing what he was passionate about. And he earned a lot of cash along the way. Plus, he made even more money when he got tired of it all and sold Minecraft. Audioshop Perhaps a film is unnecessary, since it's all well documented. Most people are familiar with the story. A large part of it was recorded online. We have tweets, blogs, and websites. What we don't have is a great graphic timeline depicting the history (until now).I was introduced to Minecraft sometime in the year 2010. And I began paying close attention to Minecraft and its creator. Because it was a fantastic story. One man and his computer changed the world. My favorite kind of story! And I clearly remember being amazed on August 20th, 2011, when Notch participated in a game coding contest and livecasted the whole event, which he did often. (Mind you, this link is a simplified version of the entire event. It lasted 48 hours. This guy was amazing! The magic of game design were revealed right in front of you. Way too fast to get the full picture but it did give an excellent understanding of what it takes to make an online game. Only him and his computer, with Java IDE Eclipse and Paint.net. The same tools he used for creating Minecraft. I later learned, through the contest that there are other skilled programmers who are just like him. Not all of them are able to strike it rich. However, many such as Notch and others, aren't in it for this reason.

Minecraft is a truly unique story that deserves a beautiful timeline. Since I couldn't find a good one, I created one:

A few interesting things to note from this timeline.

- Notch began working on Minecraft just few weeks prior to when he took on a new job at jAlbum, the same software used by this site! - Notch spent the next year working on Minecraft before deciding to quit his job. At the time, about 20.000 copies had been sold! Even though the game was only in alpha phase. It was promising to say the least. - The second quarter of 2010 and the first half of 2011 must have been crazy. They launched Mojang, a company around Minecraft, hired many individuals, created a plethora of improvements to Minecraft and released a second (completely different) game, talked with Valve and organized MineCon. In the midst of all that, they sold millions of Minecraft copies! Several important Minecraft events appear to have occurred on June 1, a couple of years in a row (also Notch's Birthday).

The Minecraft story isn't finished yet. Minecraft is still alive and setting new records. However, Notch and Minecraft were at one time part of the same narrative, but are now on separate timelines.

However, whatever happens next, the tale of Minecraft will always be an inspiring story and the impact it has on the entertainment and gaming industry will be felt for many years to come. That makes it even more unique that thanks to the power of Youtube we have this 2009 video.
