Minecraft has definitely gotten popular in the last decade or so since it was released in 2009 / 2010 - it's been one of the most popular games ever in terms of sales and perhaps in terms of its influence.
However, I've thought that the latest versions of MC don't quite capture the same vibe as the older versions (Beta 1.7.3 and prior). Both are fantastic, I'm not going to say it. However, I believe they're two totally different beasts that can't be comparisons.
i love html5
Modern Minecraft versions feel more RPG-like to me, which counters some of the loneliness the Alpha and Beta versions left you feeling. The older versions don't have as many tasks, which means you need to be creative to have fun. In the newer versions though, there seems (could be wrong though) to be a few set tasks that you have to do (like collect food for the constantly-decreasing hunger bar), so you'd usually always have something to do because the game's told you that you have to do it (if that makes any sense)!
My Experience
I am a player of NSSS, ClassiCube, or AlphaPlace most of the time.
ClassiCube
ClassiCube, an open-source reimagining Minecraft Classic 0.30, is accessible for modern play on Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. It's currently in alpha. You can launch the game in Singleplayer mode and you'll be able see an 0.30-style map with 0.30 style menus and 0.30 style blocks (same textures, block behavior). This version 0.30 is updated to work with modern operating systems (and without the need to depend on old versions of Java) and comes with the new level format, vastly enhanced performance, as well as a new block style.
The fun begins when you enter SMP mode (multiplayer). Some servers are still 0.30 nostalga servers. However many servers are using the latest Classic+Hax or Enhanced game modes. These modes offer many features that improve the quality of life like flight and noclip as well as custom blocks.
