Sebagian ahli mengatakan mumgkin ini adalah bahasa pinjaman dari Babel. dalam Mazmur 74:14 Lewiatan dipakai sebagai petunjuk terhadap Firaun dan Keluaran sejajar dengan kata Ibrani tannin , 'raksasa sungai atau raksasa laut'
> Kata lewiatan menjadi sinonim dengan mahluk atau monster laut . Pada buku novel Moby-Dick , lewiatan merujuk pada ikan paus raksasa, dan pada bahasa Ibrani modern, lewiatan berarti "ikan paus".Dan juga dalam beberapa mitologi lewiatan dikenal sebagai dewa lautan dalam mitologi Jepang atau Kanaan . Menurut beberapa sumber lewiatan adalah ular raksasa jahat berkepala tujuh.
Menurut Alkitab, lewiatan adalah makhluk raksasa yang hidup di lautan. Ia mempunyai kulit sangat keras yang mampu menghancurkan semua senjata. Selain itu ia juga memiliki mata yang bercahaya yang digunakan untuk melihat di lautan yang dalam dan gelap.
