Valve "not Intends to Block Downloading Old Versions" On Steam

Update - September 28, 2021 - Valve responded to claims that Steam might remove the option to download older versions of games.



September 28 - Valve has shared a statement with PCGamer which explains that the company does not plan to eliminate the option to download older game versions. A spokesperson from Valve told PCGamer that the company is not going to stop users from downloading older versions. "What we're working on is a method on handling edge cases involving unowned content, and also helping partners more easily take down the builds that must be removed due to copyright issues. When it's ready for release we'll share more about that work." Original story follows.



The most recent Steam beta includes a feature that seemingly removes the ability for players to roll back game updates or play older versions of games on Steam. In the new version users are no longer able to download depots for Steam games to play earlier versions of games they own - and many are unhappy about this change.

The update will be live in Steam's client and no one will be able to play older versions.



This was discovered by SteamDB creator Pavel Djundik, who confirms that it would now be impossible to download earlier game depots of Steam games and play them with the new code at least if Steam makes it mandatory for all games. The previous Steam beta introduced a significant change to downloads for games.



With this change, it is no longer possible to download older game versions, because client asks for a code (GetManifestRequestCode) that rotates every five minutes.

A lot of Steam tinkerers are upset with this change and asking for it to be reversed. Valve will decide if it will be prior to the live release.
