The Kerem Tunnel is the first bike tunnel in Israel and was officially opened in the year 2000 as a part of the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycling route around Jerusalem, the capital city.

The tunnel links Nahal Refaim and Emek Motza. The southern entrance is in Refaim Park under Ein Laban. The northern entrance, Nahal Ein Kerem, is about half a kilometer away from the Kerem junction.

The 2.1-kilometers-long tunnel project was officially inaugurated during a celebration held on Thursday that was attended by Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze'evElkin, Mayor Moshe Lion, Gihon water company chairman Avi Baleshnikov as well as hundreds of cyclists.

The city's rich history was a reason why it was the most visited tourist attraction in the past. Elkin stated that the present along with its historic treasures the tunnel project incorporates modern-day tourism. "The inauguration (of [this] tunnel project is an additional part of the development of Jerusalem and the transformation of Jerusalem into a popular city to visit for all kinds of visitors throughout Israel and around the world."

Elkin his ministry, which together with the Jerusalem Municipality spearheaded the project, said the ministry "invests hundreds of millions of shekels every year in the improvement of the tourism industry in Jerusalem and in the creation of innovative tourist attractions and ventures that link the fascinating history of our capital city to its future... I invite all cyclists to come and take a ride along the contemporary, well-maintained road that takes in the view of Old Jerusalem.

The project was financed by Elkin's ministry as well as the Tourism Ministry. It also included the budgets for the Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation. The work was carried out by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

Elkin stressed that "The Kerem Tunnel Project is an essential tool for achieving the dream to transform the concept of transport in Jerusalem." Elkin stated that the new tunnel is connected with the Jerusalem Ring Path and will connect with existing bike routes. It will also be made paved in its different areas. The tunnel will be a great way to encourage cycling and promote green transportation in the capital.

נווה פריצקי The Kerem Tunnel first was excavated in the 90s to move the main sewer line of the Gihon Corporation towards Sorek. It is currently being used as an infrastructure Tunnel which includes the fifth waterline to Jerusalem from the Mekorot water corporation.

Construction of roads installation, blowers, sophisticated security systems and electrical wiring are all part of the ongoing construction. The tunnel will be safe for public to use throughout the entire year.

The Kerem Tunnel gives you access to many recreational sites, such as Ein Kerem Neighborhood, the Biblical Zoo and Aquarium and also historic natural springs Ein Haniyeh or Ein Laban.
