As part of the 42-kilometer Jerusalem Ring Path cycling route that runs around the capital, the Kerem Tunnel was inaugurated.

The tunnel connects Nahal Refaim and Emek Motza. Its southern entrance is in Refaim Park under Ein Laban. The northern entry, Nahal Ein Kerem, is about half a kilometer away from the Nahal Ein Kerem junction.

The 2.1-kilometers-long tunnel project was officially inaugurated during a celebration on Thursday attended by Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze'ev Elkin, Mayor Moshe Lion, Gihon water company chairman Avi Baleshnikov as well as hundreds of cyclists.

Jerusalem's rich past was the main reason for it to be a popular tourist spot in the past. Elkin declared that, in the present aside from its historic treasures, it is also home to modern-day travelers. "The inauguration (of this tunnel project) is another aspect of the growth of Jerusalem and its transformation into a desirable tourist city for all sorts of visitors in Israel and around the world."


Elkin, who heads the project along with Jerusalem Municipality said that his ministry invests millions of dollars in the city's tourism growth and the development of innovative activities and ventures that tie the rich history of Jerusalem to its future. I invite cycling enthusiasts to come and enjoy the modern and well-maintained cycle route that overlooks the special scenery of Old Jerusalem."

Elkin's Ministry and the Tourism Ministry budgeted the project.

Elkin stated that "The Kerem Tunnel Project is a central tool to realize the goal to change the way we think about transport throughout Jerusalem." Elkin stated that the new tunnel is connected with the Jerusalem Ring Path and will join existing bike routes. It will also be paved throughout its various areas. The tunnel will be a great way to help cyclists and promote green transport in Jerusalem.

In the late 1990s in the 1990s, the Kerem Tunnel was excavated to move the main sewer line from Gihon Corporation to the Sorek purification plant. It is now utilized as an infrastructure tunnel and also houses the fifth water line which is operated to Jerusalem from the Mekorot water company.

Road construction installation, blowers, advanced safety systems , and electrical wiring are all part and parcel of the current work. The tunnel will be safe for people to use all entire year.

The Kerem Tunnel also allows access to unique recreation sites which include the Ein Kerem neighborhood, the biblical zoo and aquarium and the historical natural springs in Ein Laban and Ein Haniyeh.
