Neve Paritzki (נווה פריצקי)Jerusalem opens the first Israel-wide cycling tunnel.

The Kerem Tunnel provides a unique riding experience and hiking experience that should be loved by everyone.
The Kerem Tunnel, the first cycle tunnel in Israel is now open as part of the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycle path that runs around Jerusalem, Israel's capital city.

The tunnel runs along the Nahal Refaim-Emek Mostza path. Its southern entrance is in Refaim Park, below Ein Laban and its northern entrance is located in Nahal Ein Kerem, about half a kilometer from the Kerem junction.

The 2.1-kilometer long tunnel was officially opened on Thursday by Jerusalem and the heritage minister Ze'ev Elkin as well as Mayor Moshe Lion. Avi Baleshnikov of Gihon, chairman of Gihon, and hundreds other cyclists were also present.

"In the past, Jerusalem was an attractive tourist city due to its rich past. Elkin stated that, today, apart from its historic treasures, it is also home to modern-day travelers. "The launch (of [this] tunnel project is another aspect of the development of Jerusalem and its transformation into a desirable tourist city for all sorts of people throughout Israel as well as across the globe."


Elkin, whose ministry together with the Jerusalem Municipality spearheaded the project, said the ministry "invests hundreds of millions of shekels each year to develop the tourism industry in Jerusalem and in the creation of exciting tourist attractions and ventures that link the rich history of our capital city to its future... I encourage cyclists to take advantage of a the modern, well-maintained cycling route that overlooks the distinctive nature of Old Jerusalem.

Elkin's Ministry Elkin's Ministry Tourism Ministry, Jerusalem Municipality as well as the Gihon Corporation all contributed to the project. The Jerusalem Development Authority completed the work.

Elkin stated, "The Kerem Tunnel project is a key instrument for achieving our dream to change the way transportation is conducted in Jerusalem." "The new tunnel will be connected to the Jerusalem Ring Path. It will connect with the various cycling routes that exist in the city. The paths will be paved throughout the city's numerous areas. The goal is to encourage cycling among the residents of Jerusalem.

The Kerem Tunnel was originally excavated in 1990 in order to transfer the main sewer from Gihon Corporation towards the Sorek purification facility. This plant is west of Sorek and is currently used as an infrastructure tunnel.

The works currently underway include road construction, installation of blowers, as well as advanced safety and electrical systems in order to ensure that the tunnel is secure for pedestrians to travel through throughout the year.

נווה פריצקי The Kerem Tunnel also allows access to special recreation areas such as the Ein Kerem neighborhood, the biblical zoo and aquarium and the historical natural springs in Ein Laban and Ein Haniyeh.
