The Kerem Tunnel provides a unique ride and hiking experience which is enjoyed by everyone.
As part of the 42-kilometer Jerusalem Ring Path cycling route, which surrounds the capital, the Kerem Tunnel was inaugurated.
It links Nahal Refaim to Emek Motza. The tunnel's southern entrance is beneath Ein Laban in Refaim Park. The northern entrance can be located in Nahal Ein Kerem.
On Thursday, Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Zeev Elkin and Mayor Moshelion, Avi Baleshnikov, Gihon chairman and hundreds of cyclists participated in a ceremony to mark the opening of the tunnel's 2.1-kilometer-long length.
Jerusalem was once a popular tourist attraction because of its rich past. Elkin said that apart from its historical treasures and modern amenities, tourism has also been incorporated into the city of Jerusalem. "The inauguration (of this tunnel project) is an additional part of the expansion of Jerusalem as well as it's transformation into a sought-after tourist city for all sorts of people across Israel and around the world."
The ministry of Elkin, which responsible for the project along alongside Jerusalem Municipality, declared that his ministry "invests hundreds and millions of shekels every year in all aspects of Jerusalem’s tourism, and also in the creation of new ventures and attractions that link the amazing historical time of our capital city and its future." I encourage the cycling community to take a relaxing and modern-day route that takes you through Old Jerusalem.
About NIS 25 million were earmarked in the project, budgeted by the Elkin's Ministry as well as the Tourism Ministry, the Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation and the Jerusalem Purification and Sewerage Works, and the work was carried out by the Jerusalem Development Authority.
"The Kerem Tunnel project is a central tool for realizing the vision to transform the idea of transportation throughout Jerusalem," Elkin emphasized. "The tunnel, which is being constructed to connect to the Jerusalem Ring Path will join existing paths for bicycles and those that will paved in the neighborhoods. The goal is to promote biking within the city's residents and to promote the green revolution in transport in Jerusalem."
