Neve Paritzki (נווה פריצקי)Jerusalem's first cycling tunnel is opened in Israel

The Kerem Tunnel provides a unique ride and hiking experience that should be loved by everyone.
The Kerem Tunnel, Israel's newest cycle tunnel, is constructed as a part of an extensive cycle path that runs through the capital.

The tunnel is located along the Nahal Refaim-Emek Motza route. Its southern entrance is in Refaim Park under Ein Laban. The northern entry, Nahal Ein Kerem, is approximately half a mile away from the Kerem junction.

On Thursday, Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Zeev Elkin and Mayor Moshelion, Avi Baleshnikov, Gihon chairman, and a slew of cyclists were present at a celebration to officially open the tunnel's 2.1-kilometer-long length.


Jerusalem was once a popular tourist attraction because of its rich history. Elkin explained that the modern tourism industry is one of Jerusalem's historical treasures and is also a part of modern-day tourism. "The opening of this tunnel is a further stage in the growth of Jerusalem as a tourism destination for all kinds of people throughout Israel and around the globe."

Elkin who, along with the Jerusalem Municipality spearheaded the project, explained that his ministry "invests hundreds of millions of shekels each year in the development of the tourism industry in Jerusalem and in the creation of exciting attractions and ventures that connect the glorious historical past of our capital city's eternal past to the future of Jerusalem... נווה פריצקי I would like to invite cyclists to come and enjoy an up-to-date and well-maintained cycling route that takes in the unique landscape of Old Jerusalem."

The project was financed by the Elkin's department and the Tourism Ministry. It also included budgets for Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation. The project was carried out by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

Elkin said that the Kerem Tunnel project was a key tool in realizing the dream of changing the concept for transport throughout Jerusalem. "The new tunnel connecting to the Jerusalem Ring Path will join existing paths for bicycles and ones that are paved in its neighborhoods. It's designed to encourage biking among its residents and promote the green revolution in transport in the capital."

The Kerem Tunnel was first excavated in the early 1990s in order to shift the main sewer line of the Gihon Corporation toward the purification plant in Sorek The Sorek Tunnel is located west of the city and is used today as an infrastructure tunnel. It also houses the fifth water line to Jerusalem from the Mekorot water company.

Road construction installation, blowers, modern safety systems and electrical wiring are all part and parcel of the present works. The tunnel will be safe for the people to use all entire year.

The Kerem Tunnel provides access to exclusive recreation spots, including Ein Kerem neighbourhood, the biblical aquarium and zoo as also the historical natural springs Ein Haniyeh, Ein Laban, and Ein Haniyeh.
