Neve Paritzki (נווה פריצקי)Jerusalem: Israel's First Cycling Tunnel opens

The Kerem Tunnel provides a unique ride and hiking experience that should be loved by everyone.
The Kerem Tunnel, Israel's newest cycle tunnel, was opened as part the 42-kilometer cycle route which is a loop around the capital.


נווה פריצקי The tunnel is located through the Nahal-Refaim-Emek-Motza route. The tunnel's southern entrance can be found within Refaim Park below Ein Laban. The northern entrance is located in Nahal Ein Kerem about half an hour away from the Kerem junction.

Inauguration of the tunnel that is 2.1 kilometers long took place in Jerusalem and the Heritage Minister Ze'ev Elkin Mayor Moshelion, Heritage Minister Ze'ev Elkin Avi Baleshnikov (Gihon water company chairman) and hundreds more cyclists.

Jerusalem was once a tourist attraction because of its rich history. Elkin stated that the current tourism industry is an integral part of Jerusalem's historic treasures and is also a part of modern-day tourism. "The opening of the tunnel is an additional aspect of the growth of Jerusalem as well as it's transformation into an attractive tourist destination for everyone throughout Israel as well as around the world.

Elkin who is in charge of the project in conjunction with Jerusalem Municipality said that his ministry invests hundreds of millions in the development of Jerusalem's tourism and the development of innovative activities and ventures that tie the glorious past of Jerusalem to its future. I invite all cyclists to take a trip and enjoy the modern, well-maintained route that overlooks Old Jerusalem.

The project was financed by Elkin's ministry and the Tourism Ministry. It also included budgets for the Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation. The work was carried out by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

Elkin stated that "The Kerem Tunnel Project is the central instrument to achieve the dream to change the way we think about transport in Jerusalem." "The tunnel, which will connect to the lengthy Jerusalem Ring Path, will join the existing bicycle routes in the city as well as those that will be paved in its various neighborhoods, to encourage cycling among the city's residents as well as its visitors as well as promoting the green transportation revolution in the capital city."

The Kerem Tunnel first was excavated in the late 90s to relocate a main sewer line for the Gihon Corporation towards Sorek. It is currently being utilized as an infrastructure tunnel which also includes the fifth line of water to Jerusalem via the Mekorot water corporation.

Present projects include road construction, installation blowers and sophisticated safety equipment to ensure the tunnel is safe for all to use throughout the year.
