Neve Paritzki (נווה פריצקי)The first tunnel for cycling in Israel is inaugurated in Jerusalem

The Kerem Tunnel provides a unique adventure in hiking and riding which is enjoyed by all.
The Kerem Tunnel is the first cycle tunnel in Israel and was officially opened in the year 2000 as part the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycling route around the capital.

The tunnel links Nahal Refaim and Emek Motza. The southern entrance is located in Refaim Park, below Ein Laban while the northern entrance is in Nahal Ein Kerem, about one kilometer away from the Kerem junction.

The 2.1-kilometer-long tunnel was officially opened by Jerusalem's Heritage Minister Zeev Elkin. It was also attended by Mayor Moshelion, Avi Balehnikov Gihon Water Company Chairman, and hundreds of cyclists.

Jerusalem was once a very popular tourist destination because of its historic past. Elkin stated that the present, in addition to its historical treasures the tunnel project encompasses modern day tourism. "The launch (of the tunnel) is an additional part of the development of Jerusalem and it's transformation into a sought-after city to visit for all kinds of audiences throughout Israel and around the globe."

Elkin's ministry, which was responsible for the project along alongside Jerusalem Municipality, declared that his ministry "invests hundreds of millions of shekels annually throughout Jerusalem's tourism and in creating innovative attractions and ventures, which connect the glorious historic time of our capital city with the future." I would like to invite cyclists to enjoy a safe and modern-day route that takes the cyclist through Old Jerusalem.

נווה פריצקי The project was funded by Elkin's ministry as well as the Tourism Ministry. It also included budgets for the Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation. The project was completed by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

Elkin stressed, "The Kerem Tunnel project will be the central tool in achieving our goal to change the way transportation is conducted in Jerusalem." "The tunnel, which is being constructed to connect to Jerusalem Ring Path will join the existing bike paths as well as those that will paved in its neighborhoods. The goal is to encourage cycling among the residents of Jerusalem and encourage the green movement in Jerusalem."


The Kerem Tunnel was originally excavated in 1990 in order to transfer the main sewer of Gihon Corporation towards the Sorek purification facility. This plant is located west of Sorek and is used today as an infrastructure tunnel.

Present projects include road construction, installation blowers, and sophisticated safety systems to ensure that the tunnel is safe for everyone to use all year.

The Kerem Tunnel also allows access to unique recreation sites - including the Ein Kerem neighborhood, the biblical zoo, aquarium and the and the historical natural springs of Ein Laban and Ein Haniyeh.
