New Minecraft Skins With Default Minecraft Skins Recall Steve's Beard

Mojang has changed the default Minecraft skins to Steve and Alex and Minecraft Steve's beard is finally back after years sporting a clean-shaven style. The blue-shirted Minecraft Steve was the original model. However, many players mistakenly thought it was a beaming smile. It was later removed to make the default character more gender neutral.



Minecraft Alex was released in 2014 as an default skin. Featuring a green top and a longer red hair that is tied into ponytails, Alex offers a slightly more feminine look than Steve's model. Microsoft studio head for Minecraft Helen Chiang said in a 2018 interview that the company wanted the Minecraft brand to challenge gender stereotypes and present Alex and Steve as having identical physical attributes and capabilities.



With the two options now available, it was decided to bring back Steve's famous goatee. A post on the Minecraft subreddit outlined the new skins - which also improve the shading of Alex to give the second character a more natural three-dimensional look. The response has been overwhelmingly positive, with a lot of fans excited to see Steve's original beard restored.



Many of the commenters have said that they're content that Steve now once again matches the style used in the majority of official artwork, including in the Nintendo brawler Super Smash Bros Ultimate. "I can see the reason why they took it off," said the Reddit comment that received the most votes. "But it was clearly an integral part of Steve's style, which Mojang seems to agree with." It is great to see it return after many years.



Jasper Boerstra, Minecraft's lead artist, expressed his opinion on the new look via Twitter. He wrote, "I'm glad you like the return of the beard!" The Only Way To Get Smarter Is By Playing A Smarter Opponent Boerstra also noted that traditional banding techniques and 'pillow shading" are used in the new skins but he asked for feedback on whether this decision was the right one. The skins also have classic options, if you prefer the more traditional looks.
