As part of the 42-kilometer Jerusalem Ring Path cycling route that surrounds Jerusalem's capital city, the Kerem Tunnel was inaugurated.

The tunnel is a link between Nahal Refaim and Emek Motza. Its southern entrance is located beneath Ein Laban in Refaim Park. The northern entrance is located in Nahal Ein Kerem.

The 2.1-kilometers-long tunnel project was officially inaugurated at a formal ceremony on Thursday , attended by Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze'ev Elkin Mayor Moshe Lion, Gihon water company chairman Avi Baleshnikov, and a slew of cyclists.

Jerusalem was a sought-after tourist destination due to its rich historical. Elkin declared that, in the present, apart from its historical treasures it is also home to modern-day travelers. "The launch of the tunnel project is yet another milestone in the advancement of Jerusalem as a tourist destination for all kinds of travelers in Israel and all over the world."

Elkin who is in charge of the project together with Jerusalem Municipality said that his ministry invests millions of dollars in the development of Jerusalem's tourism and in the creation innovative activities and ventures that tie the glorious past of Jerusalem to its future. I would like to invite cyclists to ride along a an attractive, well-maintained cycling route that overlooks the distinctive nature of Old Jerusalem.

Elkin's Ministerial, Tourism Ministry, Jerusalem Municipality and Gihon Corporation contributed approximately NIS 25,000,000 for the project. Work was performed by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

"The Kerem Tunnel project is an essential tool to realize the goal to change the concept of transportation across Jerusalem," Elkin stressed. "The tunnel is set to connect to the Jerusalem Ring Path. The Kerem Tunnel, originally excavated by the Gihon Corporation in the 1990s in order to move its main sewer line to the Sorek purification plant.

Current works include road construction, installation blowers and advanced safety systems to ensure that the tunnel is safe for everyone to use all year.
