The Illegal Architecture was made by a massive 145 people, gathered by the Minecraft Architects Project, a Japanese group. DamboRu, the organizer, says that they realized in the beginning that this would lead to "organised chaos." They decided to design the theme accordingly. "As many people who were unfamiliar with one another were taking part in the event, we thought the theme should allow people to build in different architectural styles, and yet let the building be integrated as one piece of art." For this, they decided, illegal architecture was perfect.
The people organising the build didn't want to restrict any builder's imagination and didn't "decide on a detailed plan," Dambo-Ru tells me. "Each participant created their own unique design." Certain parts of the event were broadcast live and the management team used it to show off any gaps that needed to be filled. However, "some skilled people played crucial roles in filling in those gaps naturally by mixing styles of build," on their own.
