WRUP: You Think You're Pretty

We all want to be attractive. Let's just admit that we'd like to be beautiful. If we were all stunningly beautiful, we would likely not all be able to hide in the house and play video games. This particular writer, for instance isn't a butterfly and more like an unholy union between an ape and a slime from the Dragon Quest series. The real world can be extremely brutal at times.



Of course, in order to deal with that reality we all have our favourite MMOs to play when the opportunity arisesas it is right now, with this week's WRUP. In light of the recent success of the quasi-MMO Minecraft We asked everyone how important it was that his or her own games be pretty. Beau Hindman (@Beau_Hindman): I'll be playing DIGDIGDIGDIG a little bit of DIGDIGDIGDIG everything and am getting ready to leave DIGDIGDIG for GDC. I might DIGDIG some time to DIGDIGDIGDIGDIG play a bit of Minecraft as well.



Graphics? Nah. Gameplay is what matters.



Brianna Royce (@nbrianna). I look back at my older WRUPs to realize that I am boring... I'm still having a lot of fun in City of Heroes. I think I'm trying to make the most of it because I am sure that once Cataclysm comes out and my guild is ready to take off! I just got a new tanker and wow! I know why I prefer controllers.



I don't consider myself a graphics snob as I play quite a few older games. I've even thought about trying the latest Ultima Online boats expansion. A game needs to have something to balance the uglinesses, some nuggets of nostalgia, brilliant strokes of gameplay or riveting stories. What happens if the game is gorgeous but the gameplay is abysmal? It's not worth my time.



Edward Marshall: If I have time, I'll play Fallen Earth.



Graphics aren't a big deal to me. However, in this day and age , I think that ASCII is better than the very least.



Eliot Lefebvre: Final Fantasy XIV Naturally. Final Fantasy XIV is my most played game of the moment. I'm currently on a mission to find better armor and weapons, which is slow going but all the more fun for the way it's presented. I'm also thinking of taking some time offline to look through my huge collection of console games.



Simple graphics don't bother my eyes, but there must be an explanation. Stylized graphics are a different beast from games that simply look bad. Of course, the line between "stylized" and "bad" is pretty subjective.



Greg Waller: I have been focusing all of my time and energy on WAR recently and plan to continue that trend throughout the weekend as my new zealot battles Badlands through Tier 3. In reference to the bonus question: Eye candy is not a good game. I can get along with sub-par graphics if the gameplay is superior.



Jef Reahard, I will be playing Guitar Hero Warriors of Rock, specifically Rush 2112. I had the pleasure of hearing it blast my ears last night in Atlanta. Yeah, I know music games are soooo 2007 but what the hell. If I manage any MMOs, it will be my usual AoC/EQII with a small side dish called FFXIV.



Krystalle Voecks: After upgrading my desktop, I'm now reinstalling everything. I'm anticipating many hours of downloading and installing this weekend. Aside from that, it's more Vanguard for me as well as some time snoozing with the old Masquerade WoD sourcebooks.



Let's face facts: Graphics are what we love. One Shots is a testimony to this. But, I don't think it's the only method to play a game. Minecraft is a hit because it's enjoyable and lets people express their creativity, not because it's visually stunning.



Lisa Poisso, @emused: We were looking over old WoW alts together and decided on the new race/class combination for Cataclysm. The graphics weren't as important to me until I read the original EQ. If EverQuest's graphics were up to the standards of today, I'd play it again in an instant -- but as-is, the graphics are a big turn-off.



Patrick Mackey: My computer is experiencing some issues at the moment. However, if it is able to work, World of Tanks will be my next game. I'll be spending some time playing Champions as well; I heard through the grapevine that Demonflame was coming out on Friday, PTS.

As someone who plays StarCraft II on the lowest graphics settings, I'd say that graphics don't really matter. However, Minecraft fails because things aren't clearly visible in the game. The purpose of visuals is to let the player know what's going on in the game and if it's not clear, the art designers have failed.
