Max and Alison are examples of how differences don't get in the way of friendship. Max is always on the lookout for a new adventure even when it means getting into trouble-while Alison prefers to stick to the rules. Both are fascinated by Max's old journal which is in a state of disrepair and the strange gate it has that its author, The Enchanter describes as a portal to the Nether, an alternate dimension of danger.

After establishing the portal following the journal's instructions, Max and Alison debate whether they should remain in the Overworld or go into the Nether to find the Enchanter. . . until a fateful accident makes the decision for them.
Trapped in a scary new world, Max and Alison find an ally in Freya, an incredibly fierce warrior who lives in the Nether with her beloved wolf, Bunny Biter. With Freya's help and with the clues in the pages of the mysterious journal, Max and Alison embark on a quest to discover the Enchanter, even as the Nether challenges their skills and friendship-to the limit.
