Minecraft's ray tracing function for Windows 10 has made its way out of beta for eight months following the feature was first made available to users to test. The look and feel of the sandbox game has been transformed by the addition of support for ray tracing to NVIDIA's RTX graphic cards. As we discussed in our hands-on review earlier this year the realistic lighting, reflections, and shadows the feature brings make Minecraft feel more immersive. While the game is very simple, the game's lighting appears real. Shadows and reflections can make it appear as if you're in the real world.
To experience the benefits ray tracing brings to the game, you'll have to play the game on a PC using a GPU from NVIDIA capable of rendering rays. The benefits it offers can only be seen in worlds and maps which use a particular physically based rendering texture pack, but you don't need to activate it - it's already switched on by default. Other players who don’t have the feature will see the worlds of the game in its normal visuals.
In its announcement, NVIDIA says ray tracing makes greater demands on your GPU, which is why it uses its DLSS AI rendering technology to ensure Minecraft with RTX will continue to run at minimum 60 FPS when playing at 1920x1080. More advanced GPU models (RTX 3080 and 3090) can run the game at 4K with over 60FPS.
