Minecraft to support UN regeneration projects
Minecraft is used to model 300 locations around the world so that people can decide how they want to alter their lives.
Block by Block is a collaboration between Minecraft maker Mojang, UN Habitat and the Block by Block program.
HOW ABOUT THAT
Minecraft allows residents to create virtual tours of urban areas.
They will also be able to alter the model and decide where the money for regeneration should be used.
One of the first places modelled in Minecraft as part of a pilot project for Block by Block is the Undugu playground - which is located in the Kibera slum area that lies in the outskirts Nairobi.
"We'll incorporate it into the game to let players can walk around and feel like it's as real as possible," Lydia Winters (community liaison manager at Mojang) explained to the BBC.
Undugu has been recreated using computers by Minecraft modeling firm Fyre UK. The UN plans to restore the playground is soon available to those who live close to it.
Virtual visits
Minecraft is set in a universe made of cubes, each one of which is made up of the different virtual materials such as stone, dirt diamond, iron ore and so on. The game is played by stacking the cubes in order to construct structures or breaking them into their raw materials, resulting in artefacts and objects.
UN Habitat approached Mojang to help with its urban renewal plans because of the ease that Minecraft can be modeled.
In 2016 300 of the areas UN Habitat plans to remodel will be recreated in Minecraft which will allow residents of these areas to participate in how their locale will be transformed.
"It's bringing decision makers together with the young people to decide on this common ground for public spaces around the globe," said Ms Winters.
