You might have seen Minecraft used to teach programming or even mods that allow in-game programming, but writing BASIC code inside Minecraft? This is a rare feat. SethBling created a BASIC interpreter that allows you to compile and execute simple programs and scripts in Mojang’s world-building game. It's essentially using many, many commands but it's actually working. You can print text, and have in-game robots ("turtles") complete tasks. Do you need to dig a long tunnel? Just start an excavation script and let the bot take care of all the hard work.
It's not a big deal to say that you will not be writing complex software for a game that wasn't designed for it. The game's operating speed of 20Hz makes code slow. Welcome to my blog You can only perform 20 commands at a time, and it gets slower the more you use it. But, you don't have to spend weeks recreating the interpreter on your own -- SethBling has published the necessary materials, so it's simply a an issue of installing the add-on, and then brushing up on your IF/THEN expressions.
