Epic Games founder and CEO Tim Sweeney says that Epic Games will not limit the sale or distribution of games featuring NFTs. Sweeney's comments follow an announcement by Minecraft developer Mojang which laid out the company's stance to not permit blockchain technologies or NFTs to be used in Minecraft.
Following Mojang's announcement, one fan reached out to Sweeney on Twitter to inquire about whether Epic Games would take a similar stance, but Sweeney responded with a negative.
"Developers should be free to design their games, and you are free to choose whether or not to play them," he says. "I believe that stores and operating system manufacturers shouldn't attempt to dictate their views to other players. We won't.
Sweeney's remarks were addressed by a different user who wanted to know what the difference is between this policy and Epic Games their policy on anti-segregation and hateful content. Sweeney said that this was due to "editorial and branding judgments" and that Epic has decided to "draw the line at acceptable norms for mainstream media."
Some users on the PC gaming subreddit have expressed displeasure with Sweeney's decision, pointing out how the Epic CEO has previously voiced his opinion against NFTs. minecraft Sweeney shared a public copy of a September 2021 email response to a tweet response. The message stated that "We don't want to touch NFTs as the whole field is currently tangled with an intractable mixture of scams , interesting decentralised tech foundations as well as scams."
Now Sweeney is certain that developers using the Epic Game store should have the option of exploring these integrations if they want, however. In a follow-up tweet that "Crypto is complicated.
