British Museum to be Digitally Recreated In Minecraft

British Museum to be digitally recreated in Minecraft By Joe Miller Technology Reporter

23 September 2014

The video game Minecraft will recreate the British Museum in London, complete with all of its exhibits.

The project is part of the Museum of the Future scheme that aims to broaden the appeal of the museum.

Numerous real-life organizations have created maps within the Minecraft universe, including Ordnance Survey and the Danish government, which aims to make young people more aware of their work.

This week, Minecraft was sold to Microsoft for $2.5bn (PS1.5bn).

A spokeswoman for the museum emphasised that the project was still at "an early stage of planning", and the "build" had not yet begun.

She explained that the company was looking to recruit volunteers to assist in the "construction".

The British Museum

The first national museum of the nation, founded in 1753

The most visited tourist attraction in the UK.

Almost six million visitors a year and holds eight million items

Its natural history collection were relocated to South Kensington in 1880s, which would later become the Natural History Museum.

Its instantly easily identifiable Great Court was designed by Lord Foster and is the largest covered public space in Europe.

One British Museum employee posted details of the project on social media site Reddit soliciting volunteers to get involved.

He received a warm response from Minecraft fans from all over the world.

Initial stages

The first step of the process involves digitally constructing the Great Court and facade of the building.

The institution hopes that this stage will be in place prior to the public debate titled Changing public dialogues about museum collections in digital age. It will take place on October 16th.

Ed Barton, who researches gaming for the analytics firm Ovum, told the BBC the move of the British Museum to Minecraft will help it to be "perceived as something enjoyable", and would serve as an effective educational tool for a younger demographic.

He said, "It's the digital version of building the British Museum using Lego." "You have to build it brick by brick".

He added that the institution should be praised for crowdsourcing the project "as it turns it into a collaborative thing" and could further engage young Minecraft fans.

He added, "What an awesome project it would be to be to build the Elgin Marbles from Minecraft."

Anyone who is interested in donating to the British Museum's project can sign up on Reddit.
