The Kerem Tunnel is the first bicycle tunnel to be constructed in Israel and was opened as part the Jerusalem Ring Path, a 42-kilometer cycle route that circles the capital.

The tunnel connects Nahal Refaim with Emek Motza. The southern entrance is located in Refaim Park, below Ein Laban while the northern entrance is located in Nahal Ein Kerem, about one kilometer away from the Kerem junction.

The 2.1-kilometer long tunnel was officially opened on Thursday by Jerusalem and the heritage minister Ze'ev Elkin as well as Mayor Moshe Lion. Avi Baleshnikov of Gihon, chairman of Gihon as well as a multitude of cyclists were also in attendance.

"In the past, Jerusalem was an attractive tourist city because of its rich history. Nowadays, aside from its rich history it also has modern-day tourism," Elkin said. "The inauguration [of] this tunnel project is yet another milestone in the advancement of Jerusalem as an ideal tourism destination for all kinds of tourists in Israel and around the globe."

נווה פריצקי Elkin's ministry, which was also in charge of the project together in conjunction with Jerusalem Municipality, declared that his ministry "invests hundreds and millions of shekels each year throughout Jerusalem's tourism, and also in the creation of new ventures and attractions that connect the magnificent historical time of our capital city and the future." Elkin's Ministry Elkin's Ministry, the Tourism Ministry, Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation all contributed to the project. The Jerusalem Development Authority completed the project.


"The Kerem Tunnel project is an essential tool to realize the idea to alter the notion of transportation throughout Jerusalem," Elkin emphasized. "The new tunnel will be connected to the Jerusalem Ring Path. It will connect with the various cycle paths already within the city. These will be paved throughout the city's diverse neighborhoods. The objective is to promote cycling among the residents of Jerusalem.

In the 1990s in the 1990s, in the 1990s, Kerem Tunnel was excavated to transfer the main sewer line from Gihon Corporation to the Sorek purification plant. It is now used for infrastructure purposes and also houses the fifth water line that connects to Jerusalem from the Mekorot water company.
