The Kerem Tunnel, Israel's newest bicycle tunnel, has been opened as part an extensive cycle path that is a loop around the capital.

The tunnel connects Nahal Refaim and Emek Motza. The southern entrance is located in Refaim Park, below Ein Laban while the northern entrance is located in Nahal Ein Kerem, about half a mile close to the Kerem junction.

The 2.1-kilometers-long tunnel project was officially inaugurated during a celebration on Thursday attended by Jerusalem and Heritage Minister Ze'evElkin, Mayor Moshe Lion, Gihon water company chairman Avi Baleshnikov, and a slew of cyclists.

Jerusalem was once a major tourist attraction because of its rich history. Elkin stated that, in addition to its historic treasures and modern amenities, tourism has also been included in the Jerusalem city. "The inauguration (of this tunnel project) is another aspect of the growth of Jerusalem and it's transformation into a sought-after city to visit for all kinds of visitors across Israel as well as around the globe."


Elkin, whose ministry was spearheaded the project along with Jerusalem Municipality stated that his ministry had invested thousands of shekels every year in the development of Jerusalem's tourism and also in the creation of new ventures and attractions that connect the stunning historic past with the future of Jerusalem. I invite the cycling community to take a relaxing and modern route that takes you through Old Jerusalem.

Elkin's Ministry Elkin's Ministry Tourism Ministry, Jerusalem Municipality as well as the Gihon Corporation all contributed to the project. The Jerusalem Development Authority completed the project.

Elkin said that "The Kerem Tunnel Project is a central tool to realize the vision to change the way we think about transport throughout Jerusalem." נווה פריצקי "The tunnel, which is connected to the lengthy Jerusalem Ring Path, will join the existing bicycle routes in the city as well as those that will be paved in the various neighborhoods with the aim of encouraging cycling among the city's residents as well as its visitors as well as promoting the green revolution of transportation in Jerusalem."

The Kerem Tunnel was originally excavated in 1990 to move the main sewers of Gihon Corporation towards the Sorek purification facility. This plant is west of Sorek and is currently used as an infrastructure tunnel.

Road construction, installation and testing of safety and electrical systems are just some of the ongoing works to ensure the tunnel is safe for all seasons.

The Kerem Tunnel also allows access to special recreation areas such as the Ein Kerem neighborhood, the biblical zoo and aquarium, as well as the historic natural springs in Ein Laban and Ein Haniyeh.
