A new version of Minecraft designed for classroom use is now available for early access. Minecraft Education Edition was announced in January alongside Microsoft's acquisition of MinecraftEdu, a team who had been working on working on the game for teachers. The replacement will be available free of charge in the summer months, and will be available before the pricing model per student will be introduced for the academic year. As a small thank you, Microsoft has promised existing MinecraftEdu customers a year of free access to Education Edition -- presumably that will begin after the trial for early access wraps up.
The Education Edition of Minecraft has certain advantages over the standard version. It can accommodate up to 30 students learn together in one world. This means that there is no need for a private server via services like Minecraft Realms. Teachers can create non-player characters (NPCs) to create a more guided experience, and also equip them with web links to let students access additional resources. A chalkboard item can be used to give instructions, and students may also use a camera for taking photos of their work, resulting in an in-game portfolio.
Microsoft says it's still working on a bunch of other features that the community has asked for. The new interface offers teachers an interactive map with markers for each student as well as the possibility of teleporting users (should anyone wander off or get lost) and a chat window that can be used to manage class-wide and private conversations. Minecraft has proven itself to be a highly effective educational tool, teaching the arts, geology, and coding -- with an official version for school its possibilities and its successes are bound to grow.
