Here's how 'Minecraft' Creates Its Gigantic Worlds

Have you ever wondered how Minecraft can produce massive worlds that are still chock-full of little details, like elaborate cliff faces and waterfalls? PBS' Game/Show is happy to explain it in a new video. MINECRAFT SERVERS You'll notice that Mojang's game is based on procedural creation. This automatically creates environments and objects that appear random, yet are guided by a set of rules. For example mountains are typically rocky and covered with snow, while low lands are often full of trees and grass.



Perlin noise calculations are used to create rough textures for Minecraft. It starts at a broad level, painting topographic maps. Then it adds sound through finer terrain details such as lakes, shrubbery and animals. It's got just enough flexibility to allow for unexpected delights such as the elaborate rock structure above. Like in the real world there is an incentive to find what's just around the corner.



Procedurally-generated game content certainly isn't new. Spelunky and the Diablo series utilize it to keep their environments up-to-date, while Borderlands makes use of it to create unique weapons. It's crucial for the seemingly endless amount of worlds in No Man's Sky. However, it's safe to say that Minecraft's absolute dependence on this math is what makes it special. Every playthrough is unique, and you might not have seen every aspect of it.
