Mojang was in the news yesterday by stating in unambiguous terms, that NFTs are not welcome in Minecraft (opens in a new tab). Good news for gamers, perhaps, however, not so much for anyone who has already committed to incorporating blockchain technology into the game-like, for instance, NFT Worlds.
"NFT Worlds," a decentralized, fully customizable , and community driven, play-to-ear gaming platform that lets world owners create limitless metaverse experiences or games for players or exclusive communities within the worlds that they own," its website (opens new tab).
Be yourself; everyone else is already taken
"Currently using Minecraft and it's sprawling open-source ecosystem, NFT Worlds builds on the foundation of decades worth of open source development within the Minecraft community and radically extends it to create completely new kinds of 3D game based on voxels, which is decentralized metaverses, backed by the Ethereum blockchain."
What that means, basically is that it allows custom Minecraft servers where players can purchase virtual land parcels and earn (and spend) cryptocurrency, a hybrid system that Mojang's policy on blockchain seems specifically aimed at removing. It certainly had an impact on the price of $WRLD (opens in new tab) was soaring after the studio's announcement.
In response to Mojang's new policy, NFT Worlds has issued an official statement (opens in new tab) decrying Mojang and Minecraft as having "no respect for builders, creators and players," and vowing to create its own game to replace it.
"We're developing a brand new platform and game based on the basic mechanics of Minecraft however, with the advancement of technology and ongoing development Minecraft has been absent for years," NFT Worlds said. "This is not a remake of an open source Minecraft replica, which will infringe on the EULA or still risk legal action, this is a complete rewrite made from scratch. The players will also be able observe a brand image change that is more friendly to players as part of this change.

The new game will have a "playstyle as well as a look and feel" similar to Minecraft, NFT Worlds said, but will feature performance optimizations, graphical improvements and new gameplay mechanics that will deliver "a more affordable, accessible and enjoyable gaming experience." It will be free for all players and "completely untethered from the policy enforcement Microsoft and Mojang have over Minecraft." At the same time, it will also be backwards compatible with existing Minecraft server plugins, which means that when the time comes to change platforms content creators will be capable of making the switch without a lot of fuss and hassle.
Making an even better Minecraft than Minecraft (while maintaining compatibility with Minecraft) is an awfully large undertaking and one that I think would invite some immediate and rigorous examination from Microsoft however, NFT Worlds doesn't have many alternatives. Mojang has effectively shut the door to its business model, but a massive switch to a brand new game would leave existing users and everything they've created so far, in the cold. The only way to keep the wheels spinning is to develop something that functions like Minecraft without actually being Minecraft. It's a big task.
In the more immediate future, NFT Worlds said it will make changes to its launcher and play pages to attract new players who don't want to be tied to the cryptocurrency angle. It also outlined some very importantstakes, with high stakes for NFT Worlds' future as a fight for both the technological and philosophical spirit of the internet.
"Microsoft has declared that they will always act in the interest of their shareholders and balance sheets, to the detriment of player experience, innovation and creators," NFT Worlds said. "We believe that an open, free, evolved version of Minecraft that Minecraft brought to the world can be a better future for developers, creators, and ultimately gamers.
"We're fighting for a better future with a player owned and operated economy where all participants benefit from their contributions to the ecosystem. This is a massive undertaking.
I've reached out to Microsoft for a response on the NFT Worlds plan and will update when I get a reply.
