Ferarro's Curious Case

Like many others We have been following the bizarre situation surrounding Ferarro one of the most prominent Paladin bloggers. On May 26 we recorded an 15 Minutes of Fame interview with Ferarro. The article was about her experiences as a blogger and paladin. It also covered her experiences as an employee of Blizzard.

After the article was written certain things took place.

First, Jagoex posted a story on Ferarro's use of pictures from the website TechDarling. Ferarro was claiming she was the person who was pictured, but in reality, she wasn't. TechDarling's creator Sarah Townsend has said that she doesn't know who Ferarro really is.

Second, Ferraro's blog Paladin Schmaladin suddenly changed to privacy mode, preventing anyone from reading it unless they had an invitation from Ferraro. Her Twitter account was subsequently locked with the message "Stalkers are Cool" and it was taken down completely the next day. Her WoW character disappeared via a server transfer and her contributions to RetPaladin.com were also deleted completely. Update: Since this article was posted, Ferarro has once again deleted her blog and thus her statement, private. However, you can look at a google cache of the page.

This started raising eyebrows and brought on lots of speculation. The whole thing came to an end today when she claimed that she was multiple people. The matter is currently being investigated.

Ferarro initially claimed that she was being stalked. But, it became so serious that Ferarro was forced to remove herself from the internet. It would be understandable, since someone's safety and life are more important than a World of Warcraft Blog.

Other members of different forums believed that she felt the weight of Blizzard coming down on her for lying about her involvement with this company.

Still others thought that is was a method of clamping up and removing herself from the scene after embarrassing information were exposed that, more or less, permanently damaged her reputation.

The speculation was played out on the WoW forums (most threads are now deleted), as well as via the comments section at Jagoex's website. That speculation continued until this morning, when Ferarro posted an answer.

She basically said that Ferarro, the person we know has been mentioned seven times. Only one of these people writes as Ferarro at a given time and only one uses Twitter. Everything is handed over to the new Ferarro owner every time. One exception is that the Ferarro WoW account was transferred around "early" however it's currently being used by Ferarro #3. Note that the sharing of WoW accounts like this is a clear violation of the Terms of Service and you're subject to severe penalties, including an outright and immediate ban.

Concerning the TechDarling pictures, those were not used with TechDarling's permission and don't represent the real Ferarro.

What is the truth?

We've investigated, and have determined using IP address records of comments left by Ferarro on WoW.com between July of 2008 and May 2009 that all of the comments were from the same subnet of IPs, and are all geographically close to one another. This means that the comments are not related unless "Ferarro #1" through "Ferarro #7" reside within just a few miles of one another, they're the same person.

An IP address is a number that your internet provider assigns to you whenever you connect to the internet. It used to change quite a bit in the past. But now when you use cable modems it will only change once in awhile. Every internet service provider has an IP address that they give to their customers.

The same small ISP gave out the same IP numbers to Ferraro at the time she claims to have been different people. Ferarro claims that Ferarro's current self-proclaimed owner took over the blog in January 2009. However, our IP records completely contradict this claim. They clearly indicate that it's the same Ferarro commenting here prior to and after this period.

While it's possible that Ferarro #7 has been the only one who has commented on this blog over the past two years, it is unlikely considering her comments on her blog today. According to the blog post the email address associated with Ferarro is turned over completely to the new Ferarro owner every time, and the new Ferarro even goes to great lengths to forward emails to previous Ferarros whenever it is appropriate.

We have clear continuity in IP addresses and email addresses that clearly disprove her claim, since all comments are associated to this email address.

What about the 15-minutes-of-Fame Article we published?

It's unfortunate that this been the case. Ferarro was denied multiple opportunities by Lisa Poisso clarify, refute and expand on the report. Particularly, the images were questioned directly and Ferarro ignored questions about them.

We have since removed the TechDarling images from the article and placed a disclaimer at its beginning.

What is the status of Paladin Schmaladin

We'll need to wait and see.

It's regrettable that things have turned out this way. Paladin Schmaladin is an excellent resource for Paladin and WoW players in general, and it's disappointing to see the authors' actions damage this otherwise reputable source of information.
