bifid adalah sandi yang dibentuk dengan dimensi yg dalam dgn kotak 3x3x3. Trifid cipher diciptakan oleh Felix Delastelle. Awalnya dia hanya membuat sandi dalam 1 kotak (bifid), karena ingin mempersulit pemecahan, maka ia membentuk perluasan dengan menambahkan dimensi baru pada kodenya, yaitu dengan pembagian 3 kotak (trifid) untuk memperkecil kemungkinan pesan dalam sandi/cipher itu gampang dipecahkan saat mengirim pesan ketika perang, dimana jika pada sandi BIFID kemarin menggunakan 1 buah kotak 5x5 maka pada sandi TRIFID kali ini akan menggunakan 3 buah kotak 3x3.angka pertama :kotak ke berapa huruf berada
angka ke-2 : baris horizontal
angka ke-3 : kolom vertikal

213121112121 bagi : 3 = 213-121-112-121
lalu angkanya 213-121-112-121 di translate ke huruf menjadi :
213 : L
121 : D
112 : B
121 : D
Jadi encrypt cipher trifid untuk kata "NATA" adalah "LDBD"
