Tate Gallery Teams up With Minecraft

Tate Gallery teams up with Minecraft By Dougal Shaw Technology reporter

The Tate Gallery will exhibit some of its most famous artworks in 3D within the virtual world of Minecraft. Is this a good method for art to be appreciated?

Ever fancied stepping inside the painting and going for a bit of an exploration inside it?

The Tate is inviting people to clamber over its artworks and have a good rummage.

There won't be any security guards on duty.

The first painting to undergo this digital, 3D transformation was Andre Derain's 1906 painting The Pool of London and Christopher Nevinson’s depiction of New York City, Soul of the Soulless City (1920).

Jane Burton, Tate Media's Creative Director Jane Burton, Tate Media's Creative Director, explains that visitors will be able to see a white cube that is a representation of the Tate Gallery.

"You walk in with the painting in your palm.

"What you can do is walk right towards the painting and then, literally, you jump into it and that's where your adventure begins."

Visitors can interact with the painting's world.

You can take a train ride and get a passing view of Nevinson's cityscape for instance. Have a snack while you wait for the builders to finish building skyscrapers.

Visitors should be wary of pirates along the Thames when they visit Derain's photograph. They may also play with explosive paint pigments.

"You take on challenges and activities that are related to the themes of the artwork.

Jane Burton, whose children introduced her to the power and potential of Minecraft Jane Burton, who is the creator of Minecraft, says, "It's art history adventure,"

Adam Clarke, a well-known Minecraft creator, first suggested that Minecraft exhibits should be created.

He suggested the idea for Tate's IK Prize, which is given to an idea that makes use of digital technology to connect people with the arts.

When the concept finally came to fruition, Tate enlisted the skills of other famous Minecraft builders such as Dragnoz, Kupo, Featherblade and Tewkesape to build the worlds inspired by the famous images.

However, not everyone is convinced.

Perspective

These Minecraft creations will provide younger audiences a greater understanding of art in order to allow them to view original works in galleries. Rachel Campbell-Johnston, Times art critic, says it's like "seeing an old buddy".

The feeling of being recognized, "like seeing celebrities" is a powerful instrument to inspire art appreciation and encourage audiences.

She continues, "But ironically the Minecraft games themselves offer a flatter experience."

"It feels more like entertainment rather than a meaningful connection with the painting, as the 3D mapping of Minecraft replaces the realistic painting's illusionistic surfaces, and does the work for you."

Digital opening

The two works by Derain and Nevinson will be available to download on Monday.

Players must pay to join the Minecraft community, but the maps that are available for download of Tate's photos are free.

Six more 3D masterpieces are in the pipeline. Many will be keeping an eye on the web to see how many people line up for Tate's Minecraft exhibition on Monday.
