In the 42-kilometer Jerusalem Ring Path cycling route, which surrounds the capital city, the Kerem Tunnel was inaugurated.

The tunnel connects Nahal Refaim with Emek Motza. Its southern entrance is within Refaim Park under Ein Laban. The northern entrance, Nahal Ein Kerem, is about half a kilometer away from the Kerem junction.

The 2.1-kilometer-long tunnel was inaugurated by Jerusalem's Heritage Minister Zeev Elkin. It was also attended by Mayor Moshelion Avi Balehnikov Gihon Water Company Chairman, and many cyclists.

Jerusalem was a desirable tourist destination because of its rich and fascinating history. Elkin said that, the present as well as its historic treasures, the tunnel project also includes modern tourism. "The inauguration of this tunnel is another element of the development of Jerusalem. The tunnel transforms the city into an attractive destination for tourists of any kind of crowd within Israel and around the world."

Elkin his ministry, which together with the Jerusalem Municipality spearheaded the project, stated that the ministry "invests hundreds of millions of shekels each year to develop the tourism industry in Jerusalem and in the creation of innovative activities and ventures that connect the fascinating history of our eternal capital to its future... I encourage you to take your bicycles on a scenic, well-maintained route that overlooks Old Jerusalem.

A total of NIS 25 million were earmarked in the project, budgeted by Elkin's ministry, the Tourism Ministry, the Jerusalem Municipality and the Gihon Corporation and the Jerusalem Purification and Sewerage Works, with the work carried out by the Jerusalem Development Authority.

Elkin declared that the Kerem Tunnel project was a key tool in realizing the vision of shifting the idea of transportation throughout Jerusalem. "The new tunnel that connects to the Jerusalem Ring Path will join existing paths for bicycles and ones that are paved in its neighborhoods. The goal is to encourage biking among the residents of Jerusalem and encourage the green transport revolution in the capital."

The work currently in progress includes road construction, installation of blowers as well as modern safety and electrical systems to make the tunnel safe for pedestrians to travel through at all times of the year.
